Marwan Zakhem founded Gallery in 1957 on Ghana Independence Day in 2016, and it has since grown across three gallery locations in Accra. The program of Gallery 1957 is focused on fostering international collaborations between modern West African art practices and the rest of the globe. The London location of Gallery 1957 opened in October 2020 and offers an additional venue for showcasing Gallery 1957 artists from throughout Africa and the diaspora.
The Gallery 1957 program connects domestic and international audiences by featuring installations, exhibitions, and performances by the most notable artists in the area. Beyond its roster of various artists and exhibitions, international gallery alliances and the launch of the artist residency training program have welcomed many foreign artists and arts professionals to Ghana and inspired them to get more involved with the vibrant contemporary art scene in the nation.
Through a public program that includes off-site events, seminars, fairs, site-specific installation commissions, as well as the publication of publications and catalogs, Gallery 1957's activity extends beyond the gallery walls and consistently supports cultural activities in Ghana and elsewhere.
