Switzerland is truly a beauty to behold. Snow-capped mountains, lush greenery, bluest skies, serene lakes and everything else here seem like a beautiful painting. Switzerland boasts not only of endless natural beauty but also of rich cultural history that makes visiting this country a worthwhile trip.
Here is a list of top must-see places in Switzerland.
Matterhorn, Zermatt is the most photographed Alpine peak in the world. The pyramid-shaped giant stands at 4,478 meters, alluring every mountaineer and tourist to conquer its ascent and the summit. Take the cable car from Zermatt, the highest cable car station in the Alps to view the breathtaking mountain up close. This place is popular amongst the skiers in winter and hikers during summer.
The 582 square kilometer-lake is one of the largest lakes of Europe lined with fairy-tale-like chateaus. Flanked by Geneva in the west and Montreux in the east, you are in for a treat of enthralling views of Alps’ reflection in the lake. In summer, the lake bustles with tourists indulging in several water sports.
With the breadth of more than 150 meters, the Rhine Falls are the largest waterfalls in Europe. Tourists can watch the bewitching spectacle from several viewing decks. The adventurous souls can go aboard a canoe to visit Schloss Laufen and Schloss Worth.
Located on a tiny island in Lake Geneva is Chateau de Chillon – the 400 years old fortress. The castle offers the most stunning views of the surrounding Alps. Take a tour of the ancient castle which houses to 14th-century paintings, subterranean vaults, weaponry, and furniture.
Lucerne is a postcard-perfect town in Switzerland flanked by gorgeous mountains. It is home to many attractions like Kapellbrücke, the oldest covered wooden bridge built on Lake Lucerne and The Lion of Lucerne, a tragic lion carved into a rock face commemorating Swiss guards massacred during French Revolution.
Bern, the capital of Switzerland, takes you back to medieval times. The Old Town of Bern enchants you with its sandstone facades, several fountains, and, old towers. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the best-preserved historical centers of Switzerland.
The Jungfrau region is the most popular attraction in Switzerland. The three big snow-clad mountains Jungfrau, Monch, and Eiger towering over green meadows create a picturesque view that is peculiar to this country. When here, you can take a journey to Europe’s highest-altitude railway station. You can also travel to a nearby Schilthorn summit to dine at the revolving restaurant perched at the height of 3000 meters with splendid views of Jungfrau.
Many rustic towns like Grindelwald, Murren, Wengen surround the Jungfrau; but the most popular one is Interlaken.
The financial capital of Switzerland packs some exciting tourist attractions as well. The historical gems like Grossmunster church, Swiss National Museum, and Lindenhof square are a few must-visit locations. The prehistoric settlements at Enge Alpenquai and Grosser Hafner and Kleiner Hafner are listed under UNESCO World Heritage Site. Zurich also has one of the most expensive shopping streets in Europe, the Bahnhofstrasse, which is home to the best designer goods.
When you think about Switzerland, you cannot leave the cheese behind. Gruyères, the cheese capital of Switzerland should be on your itinerary even if you are not a cheese fan. When here, don’t miss on trying the world-famous cheese for fondue, the town’s cream, and meringue dessert.
