The Barzan Towers found in Doha, Qatar, are ancient watchtowers built in the late 19th century under the reign of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Jassim Al Thani. The towers were initially built to monitor and guard the regions water sources and shores and also as an observatory for tracking the moon's phases to determine the Islamic calendar. Barzan is Arabic for 'high place,' and was symbolically represented by the 16-meter towers, where one could get strategic views over the terrain. In the 20th century the fort-like structure was rebuilt to its original shape, its thick walls being modified to counter excessive heat, in accordance with the traditional Qatari architecture. Barzan Towers are now a symbol of culture and give an insight into Qatar's military and architectural past.
