The most notable building in the city is the Catedral de Majorca. The majestic 16th-century church known as La Seu, the most recognizable structure in Mallorca's capital, is situated in the center of Palma de Mallorca. The cathedral, constructed by the Crown of Aragon on the site of a mosque from the Moorish era, is 121 meters long, 55 meters wide, and 44 meters tall at its nave.
It combines the Renaissance original with the artificial-feeling pseudo-Gothic monumentalism of the 19th century. In addition to its immense size, priceless artifacts, and undeniable beauty, the cathedral's remarkable interior elements, created by renowned modern artist Miquel Barceló and architect Antoni Gaud, set it apart from other cathedrals in the globe.
How to explore Catedral de Majorca?
- Three naves with eight aisles each make up the rectangular cathedral.
- Chapels are located in the side aisles that separate the buttresses.
- The roof comprises fourteen fragile, lofty octagonal pillars supporting rib vaults.
- Like many Gothic cathedrals, it includes outstanding stained glass windows, especially the rose window of the apse, the largest in the Gothic world, created by 24 colored triangles. Visit the roof terraces to get a close-- up look at the magnificent rose window, which is the largest in all of Europe.
- The Mirador portal, one of the world's most remarkable examples of the Gothic style, with its view of the sea, is among the most significant exterior features of the cathedral. It was constructed in the advent of the 15th century.
- Enjoy the beautiful views of the vast sea and the city from the cathedral's roof terraces, which feature the bell tower, buttresses, and passageway between the two main towers.
- The door jambs of its covered atrium are adorned with sculptures of Saints Paul, Andrew, Peter, John the Baptist, and James.
- The Madonna and Child are seated in the mullion (a copy of the original that is now in the museum). The Last Supper and the Heavenly Father with six adoring angels are depicted in the tympanum.
- The sculpture on the three archivolts depicts the prophets, patriarchs, and musical angels.
- The four quatrefoil arches that make up the top of the pediment are centered with the face of Christ the Savior.
