La Cote des Basques

The birthplace of the French surf scene, it's a super pretty and popular spot with generally good vibes, best low to mid tide.The waves here are less powerful and heavy than the rest of the beaches in the area, serving up fun peaks and mellow walls, particularly near the headland, which also provides some protection from northerlies. It picks up more swell and power to the south, with clusters of rock appearing and the crowd generally thin out.

According to devotees of La Cote des Basques, the European surfing movement began in the late 1950s. The beach is frequently rated as one of the best in Europe. 

This is where surfing began, according to legend, in the 1950s, when the first daring pioneers launched themselves with their boards to conquer the waves. Peter Viertel was the first person to ride the Atlantic Ocean tubes and was also in charge of popularising the sport in France. Then, throughout Europe, Biarritz became the surfing mecca.

You can't help but want to surf at this postcard-worthy beach in the Basque Country. Numerous schools operate along the coast. Enjoy the ocean view framed by mountains extending all the way to Spain. It's a charming and unusual way to get there: take the stairs with hairpin turns known as the '100 steps' from the parking lot along the Corniche. 

Don't forget to stop at the Bar de la Côte for refreshments after your surf session. This former art-deco bathing facility has an incredible sea view from its pergola. 

• Admire the magnificent Villa Belza from its rocky outcropping:

This mile-long stretch of beach, named one of France's top three, has something for everyone. The opulent and well-known Villa Belza is located north and appears to protrude from the cliff, and the southernmost part of Spain's coastline is open. The area is ideal for beginners at low tide, but it is only recommended for experienced surfers because it becomes more difficult at high tide. The beach is covered in seawater as the waves crash against the rocks. The sand banks frequently shift, resulting in a constantly changing beach break.
