The Gothic-style Cathedral of Valencia is a building that was constructed on top of an ancient Roman temple that was later transformed into a mosque. The Gothic Cathedral is the most significant religious structure in Valencia, and its tower, known as 'el Miguelete,' is considered to be one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.

It preserves many characteristics from many times, from the Romanesque to Baroque centuries. Construction on the structure that is there now started in the 13th century. The Cathedral is an example of both art and history. Documentation and archaeological research both point to the Holy Grail of Valencia being the same one that Jesus used during the Last Supper. This leads us to believe that the Holy Grail of Valencia is authentic.

What to see at Valencia Cathedral?

The Capilla del Santo Cáliz, also known as the Chapel of the Holy Chalice and a former chapterhouse, is one of the most stunning features found inside the Cathedral. This chapel is known for its lovely star vault, which depicts an image of heaven along with the Coronation of the Virgin and 12 Apostles. After dismantling the baroque vault that had been covering them over the previous ten years, these were found again. They are supposed to be symbolic of twelve angels performing on various instruments. It is widely considered to be among the most significant figurative works produced during the early stages of the Spanish Renaissance.

The Cathedral is home to a number of interesting features, including the Latin cross, the ambulatory, and the lantern tower that sits atop the crossing.

Other components that are drawing attention include the Door of the Irons, which is designed in the Baroque style, as well as the doors of Palau and the Almoina (Romanesque).

Up to ninety paintings, spanning the Gothic, Renaissance, and Mannerist periods, are currently on display at the Cathedral Museum. Art by artists such as Maella and Goya, as well as panel paintings by Juan de Juanes, can be found in this collection.

The Puerta del Palau, the Cathedral's oldest entry, is designed in the Romanesque style with Mudéjar characteristics, and it is one of the Cathedral's most prominent exterior features. Every week on Thursday at noon, proceedings of the Water Tribunal are held in this location. Be sure to be there on Thursday to see the stunning results!

Climbing to the top of the Miguelete tower is your best bet for taking in the expansive vistas that the area has to offer. You will have to climb 207 steps in order to reach the top, but the hard work will be well worth it because you will be rewarded with the best panoramic views of the city.
