Basilique de la Visitation

The Basilica of the Visitation in Annecy, a prominent representation of the city's religious past, is situated on the crêt du Maure and commands both the city and its surroundings. The Pointe de la Visitation is a prominent landmark in the Annecy metropolitan area and is visible for miles in all directions. 

One of the first things you'll notice as you get closer to the town is the tall spire of this lovely white structure. You may explore its stunning architecture and find out more about the nuns who still reside there by visiting.  Many people mistakenly believe that the basilica is much older than it is at first appearance. Despite dominating Annecy for more than a century, it is one of the city's most recent religious structures because work on it started in 1909 and was finished in 1930. But Cardinal Tedeschini didn't dedicate it until 1949. The basilica's name alludes to Mary, the mother of Christ, visiting her niece Elizabeth. 

You will gladly take the time to admire the building's magnificent front before going inside. There is peace and tranquility inside. The basilica is magnificent overall, but there are a few special aspects, such as a superbly made mosaic. Visits are especially recommended for the vibrant stained glass windows created by master glassmaker Chigot. 

The two bronze coffins that contain relics thought to originate from the bodies of two saints, Saint Joan de Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales, are arguably the most intriguing items in the church. You can take the time to visit the famous Saint-François church in Annecy, which housed these relics in the past. 

The Basilica of the Visitation is open every day and is free to enter. Just be aware that there is a small community of nuns who work and live there, so it's likely that they may be at work when you are there.
